If short stories or essays [5,000 words or less] in the creative non-fiction, mystery, romance, crime, young adult, or other “under-represented” sub-genres in the literary world strike your fancy, Black Fox Literary Magazine is currently accepting submissions for their biannual publication, future blog, and weekly webpage postings.
Black Fox Literary Magazine is a print and online publication of fiction, poetry, and non-fiction. They publish many forms and styles of work in all genres, but they especially like to publish styles of fiction that tend to be under-represented in literary journals, such as mystery, crime, romance, young adult, and all sub-genres in-between. In keeping with their goal of lending an ear to unheard voices, Black Fox publishes new and established authors alike. You can get a sense of what they publish by reading past issues online.
Currently, they do not pay their writers, but they have an annual short story contest (with a $4 entry fee) that pays $100 to the winner, plus publication. They completed their second annual contest in December of 2013; so, bookmark that submissions link for future contest updates.
Their reading periods leading up to their yearly editions are:
Summer Issue [July] Submission Period: January-June
Winter Issue [January] Submission Period: July-December
If your submission reaches them the day after a reading period ends that manuscript will automatically be considered for the following edition. Make sure you follow their guidelines, and they only accept submissions online. [Hint: This is the submission manager they will accept their contest submissions through, as well.]
Black Fox will also take your flash fiction and poetry [5 per submission] for their weekly webpage update:
We are looking for quality poetry or flash fiction to be featured on our website on a weekly basis. Exceptional poetry and flash pieces may be included in one of our quarterly issues at the discretion of the editors. There is no submission fee for our features. If you would like one of your poems or flash fiction pieces to be considered, please submit through our submission manager.
Finally, Black Fox is planning on launching a blog in the near future, if you have any writings on “the craft of writing, book reviews, book news, and publishing news. If it’s writing, book, or publishing related then this is the place for it. ” These, too, can be submitted through the manager linked above.
